Amiwero Urges Tinubu to Direct Utilisation of Maritime Fund


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to direct utilisation of the Maritime Fund for its intended purpose of developing and implementing shipping and maritime infrastructure for indigenous operators, as stipulated in the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Act 17 of 2007.

In a letter to Tinubu by Lucky Ehis Amiwero, President, National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents,NCMDLCA and former member of the Presidential Task Force on the Reform of Nigeria Customs Service, emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure development to enhance cargo delivery systems, create employment, and boost capacity in Nigerian ports.

“Neglect of our maritime infrastructure has stifled growth and crippled local operators,” Amiwero lamented. “We urge President Tinubu to unlock Nigeria’s maritime potential by developing transportation infrastructure, bonded warehouses, and equipment.” He added

The Maritime Fund, established under Section 17-(1) of the Act, allocates 25% of its revenue to promote indigenous shipping and infrastructure. “However, since the Agency’s inception in 2007, this allocation has not been implemented, leaving indigenous operators incapacitated”. He said

The 3% gross freight earnings on international inbound and outbound cargoes, contributed by importers, exporters, and licensed customs agents, should be utilized to support these developments.


“By implementing these measures, Nigeria’s ports can become more efficient, reducing cargo turnaround time and fostering economic growth”. Amiwero stated
