The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the pilot rollout of its Management Information System (MIS) File Tracker at the PTML Area Command, in a move aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency, promoting transparency, and accelerating documentation processes across the Service.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, said the deployment forms part of the Service’s broader drive to deepen the use of technology in customs administration and improve operational efficiency through digital innovation.
Represented at the launch by the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of ICT/Modernisation, Oluyomi Adebakin, the CGC described the initiative as another milestone in the NCS modernisation agenda, which is focused on deploying digital solutions to strengthen internal operations and facilitate seamless trade.
Adeniyi noted that the MIS File Tracker would improve administrative processes by promoting speed, efficiency, and transparency in the management of official documentation and personnel records.
He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to leveraging technology to transform customs operations and improve service delivery, noting that the new platform builds on other digital initiatives introduced under the modernisation programme, including the Nigeria Trade Portal and the Unified Customs Management System (UCMS), also known as B’Odogwu.
According to him, the MIS is an enterprise wide administrative platform that serves as a Single Sign-On (SSO) application, enabling the use of a unified dataset across departments for administrative functions.
He explained that the platform will support key processes such as leave and pass applications, file tracking, duty roster management, internal staff orders, nominal roll administration, and other internal operations, while also providing a feedback mechanism for continuous improvements.
The Customs boss expressed confidence that the deployment would streamline internal workflows, reduce reliance on manual processes, and support data-driven decision-making across the Service.
The PTML Area Command was selected as the pilot location owing to its reputation as one of the Nigeria Customs Service’s most technologically advanced commands. The command has previously served as the testing ground for several digital innovations, including the rollout of the Unified Customs Management System (B’Odogwu).
Speaking at the event, the Acting Controller of PTML Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Nura Miko, expressed confidence in the command’s ability to successfully implement the initiative and serve as a model for customs innovation.
He said the command remains committed to maximising technology-driven trade facilitation initiatives introduced by the Customs management.
Miko thanked the CGC for the confidence reposed in the command and disclosed that PTML is already working to reduce the cargo clearance time for compliant Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) cargoes from the current two hours to just one hour.
He described the introduction of the MIS File Tracker as a significant step towards sustaining the Nigeria Customs Service’s position as one of Africa’s leading customs administrations.
The acting controller assured stakeholders that the PTML Area Command would justify the confidence placed in it by ensuring the successful implementation of the MIS File Tracker from the pilot stage through to full deployment across the Service.
