The Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit of Edo State Police Command have arrested 12 suspected members of a secret cult at Uza Street, in Benin City.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, disclosed that the suspects were having a clandestine meeting to attack a rival cult, when the police stormed the scene.
According to the police spokesperson, 12 members of the cult were arrested, while others escaped.
The suspects are: Ama Success aged 19, Odion Sunday 23, Evening Omon 23, Famous Prosper 23, Joseph Ikehinde 22, Junior Uwadia 22, Cyrillic Omonhe 20, Charles Friday 20, Uyi Ewansiha 33, Ibrahim Abdulmalik 22, Uyi Okogiewe 19, and Ogbonna Maduabuchi 30.
One of the suspects, who spoke to journalists confessed to the crime and narrated his involvement.
“I joined secret cult because of oppression. Young boys like me used to collect items from me on the road, so I decided to join, to stop the oppression but now, I regret joining secret cult”, he said.
Similarly, the Command also arrested one Emeka Ogwu, aged 27, for allegedly stealing an armoured cable belonging to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
The police arrested Ogwu while on patrol along Upper Mission/Upper Lawani axis, Benin City, following a distress call. The suspect and his accomplice who is at large, were seen vandalising the cable.
SP Nwabuzor noted that the cable has been recovered and the suspect will be charged to court.
