IMION Offers Media Practitioners Subsidised Blue Economy Course to Promote In-depth Reporting
The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has called on maritime journalists to participate in its Executive Course on Blue Economy for Media Practitioners at a subsidised fee, as part of efforts to deepen their understanding and improve reporting of the sector.
The Director-General of IMION, Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia (Rtd), PhD, made this known during a visit by the Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) on Wednesday, disclosing that the institute plans to host the second cohort of the course soon.
According to him, the programme is deliberately designed to enhance the knowledge base of maritime journalists, stressing that a proper understanding of the blue economy is essential for accurate and in-depth reporting.
Udofia explained that inadequate knowledge of the subject could result in inaccurate reports, which could subsequently attract counter-reports from stakeholders with a better understanding of the issues.
He noted that although the blue economy has become a widely discussed concept, there is considerably more to it than the general understanding often presented in public discourse.
He maintained that specialised training would enable journalists to understand the various dimensions of the blue economy and report developments in the sector more effectively.
“A course like this will enable journalists to know better and be able to report in-depth on whatever goes on in the blue economy sub-sector.”
Udofia said IMION would subsidise the participation of journalists in the course to encourage media practitioners to acquire specialised knowledge while also contributing to the visibility of the institute’s activities.
He stated that participants would have a dual role as beneficiaries of the training and media practitioners who could help propagate the institute’s programmes and amplify its activities.
The IMION DG said the arrangement would enable the institute to reduce the cost of participation for journalists and encourage wider participation in the programme.
