Salary Debt: CRFFN Bows to Maritime Workers Pressure, Pays Employees 5 Months Arrears


The leadership of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced that the management of the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) has paid five months’ outstanding salaries to its staff, out of a total of seven months arrears owed.

This is coming after the threatened industrial action over the lingering issue of unpaid salaries to workers who are members of the union.

In a press release issued m the Union’s President General,the MWUN commendrd the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy , Adegboyega Oyetola for helping to proffer solution to the issue of the CRFFN’s staff salary arrears.

President General of the union,Dr Adewale Adeyanjy also described the minister’s intervention as timely and a demonstration of his unwavering commitment to workers’ welfare in the maritime sector.

Adeyanju further described Oyetola for his dedication and humane leadership that has made a significant difference in workers welfare since assumption of office

The Union urged the CRFFN management to settle the remaining two months’ outstanding salaries as soon as possible.

“MWUN also reminds the Honourable Minister that having paid only five months’ out of the seven months arrears owed to the workers, the CRFFN management now has two months in outstanding staff salaries to settle. The Union hereby further appeals for the support of the Honourable Minister and demands that the CRFFN completes the task post-haste, by immediately settling the remaining two months arrears” Adeyanju said.

The union had recently stated if CRFFN does not pay the arrears of the salaries owed its members, the Union will withdraw the services of its members from all maritime organizations nationwide.

Part of the previou statement reads by the union stated that “Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) wish to bring to the notice of the general public the continued nonpayment of nine months of salaries owed our members by the management of CRFFN.

“We are even more dismayed that the management of CRFFN in nonchalant disregard to one of the resolutions of our meetings which states that going forward, payment of staff salaries shall be the first line of charge and available funds shall be used for this purpose and there shall be no more diversion of available funds into any other expense where staff salaries are yet to be paid, still went ahead to organize a kangaroo training for some selected staff(s) living behind a homogeneous cache of unpaid salary(s).

Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria MWUN can no longer stand idly by and watch the impunity been put on show by CRFFN .MWUN use this medium to put the general public on notice that should the management of CRFFN continue to withhold the nine months of salaries owed our members who are their employees, we will have no other alternatives than to totally withdraw the services of our members in the Nigerian Port Authority, Dock labour, Shipping and Freight Forwarding Agency and seamen from all ports, jetties ,terminals and Oil and Gas platforms nationwide. All authorities to please take notes.”

Sources at the CRFFN office in Lagos,Abuja and Kano had expressed appreciation to Dr. Adeyanju and union for their intervention
