National Security: Customs Fosters Inclusive Stakeholder Participation in Idiroko Border


The Ogun 1 Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has re emphasised the need for inclusive participation of all stakeholders in Idiroko border area to promote law abiding conduct and achieve the goals of Nigerian and Benin Republic governments at a recently organised expanded meeting.

Chaired by the Area Controller of Ogun 1 Command, Comptroller Ahmadu Bello Shuaibu, the meeting under the aegis of
Inter-Agency Border Security Forum had participants drawn from Nigeria and neighbouring Republic of Benin.

According to a press release issued by Customs Public Relations Officer, Hameed Bukoye Oloyede,the meeting which also involved the Secretary General of Inter-Border Security Forum, Dr Bonny A Botoku, a mediator between the 2 countries.

Oloyede, a Chief Superintendent of Customs said the meeting resolved that
community Chiefs and youth leaders are to return to their people and educate them on the motorcycle regulations and traffic laws being enforced by the Republic of Benin Police operatives.

It was also agreed that security agencies at Idiroko border would assist in enforcing Benin traffic laws by restricting movement of traffic offenders crossing over to Republic of Benin.

The meeting also admonished members of the border communities on both sides of the border not to take laws into their hands. It specifically announced a prohibition of Idiroko youths from using jungle justice whenever they think an infraction has been committed. It also enjoined the youths to report any suspected case to the Nigerian Police, Idiroko Divisional Office or any other security agency at the border.
