Lagos Port Manager Urges Stakeholders to Prioritise Personal Health on World Safety Day

As the world marks the 2026 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Port Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr. Ibrahim Lawal, has urged all the port users to prioritise their health and maintain both physical safety and mental wellbeing at all times.

Speaking at a road show which commenced at the gate of the Apapa Port Complex, in commemoration of the annual event observed every April 28 by the International Labour Organization, Lawal noted that this year’s theme, “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment,” highlights the growing importance of mental, emotional, and social health in the workplace.

He stressed that while physical safety remains critical in port operations, equal attention must be given to factors such as work related stress, fatigue, and employee welfare, adding that staff should not hesitate to seek medical attention and visit the hospital when necessary to ensure early diagnosis and proper care.

Lawal also commended the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) , Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho for prioritising the welfare of staff, noting that the leadership has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to creating a supportive and conducive work environment.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve staff well being through enhanced welfare programmes, regular engagement with employees, and policies aimed at promoting both physical safety and mental health. According to him, these initiatives have not only boosted NPA workforce morale but have also strengthened resilience and productivity among workers across the ports.

He said that World Day for Safety and Health at Work serves as a global platform to raise awareness on the prevention of workplace accidents and diseases, while advocating for safer and healthier working conditions worldwide.

Day one of the awareness event led by Abdullahi Kakale,the Port’s Safety officer featured music, interactions and counseling along the various corridors leading to the premier port of Apapa while day two will feature lectures on the theme for this year’s event.
