The marathon, titled “20 Days of Eloquence – Nigeria Speaks to the World,” concluded at exactly 3:35 p.m. on April 21, 2026, when the Dean of the School of Eloquence, Ubong Essien, led the final countdown that marked the end of the historic relay.

The feat surpassed the previous global benchmark of 127 hours, 31 minutes, and 43 seconds, set in 2018 in New Zealand, positioning Nigeria at the forefront of global speaking endurance initiatives.

During a virtual session held after the final countdown, an official adjudicator, Lena Kuhlmann, stated that the attempt would undergo a thorough review process in line with established global standards, with a formal announcement expected in the coming days.

Also addressing participants during the session was Jaime Nolan, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Speakers Association, who described the 480-hour relay as a remarkable display of discipline and collective effort that expands the boundaries of the speaking profession worldwide.

The closing ceremony attracted several government officials, institutional leaders, and stakeholders in communication and leadership development.

Among those in attendance were Emmanuel Oluwadamilola, Special Adviser on Blue Economy to the Governor of Lagos State, and Christiana Salwang, Lagos State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps.

Also present were Patience Essien, alumni of the institution, members of the Learning and Development Network International, including Victor Diali and Sandra Iheanacho, as well as participants of the NYSC who contributed to the relay.

Speaking at the event, Oluwadamilola described the initiative as a national milestone that goes beyond setting records, noting that it represents a structured effort to improve communication, civic engagement, and leadership capacity in Nigeria.

Organizers said the initiative was conceived to commemorate 20 years of the School of Eloquence, using the symbolic framework of a 20-day succession of voices.

According to Essien, the project was designed to strengthen public discourse, promote structured communication, and equip Nigerians across sectors, from young people to policymakers with effective speaking skills.

Over the 20-day period, the platform hosted speakers from diverse professional and social backgrounds, creating what observers described as a nationwide movement focused on expression, dialogue, and knowledge sharing.

With the successful completion of the 480-hour marathon, expectations remain high that the achievement will receive official recognition once the verification process is completed by Guinness World Records.

If confirmed, the record would place Nigeria firmly on the global map for public speaking endurance and mark one of the most ambitious communication initiatives undertaken in the country.
