Kebbi Customs, Nigerien Counterparts Move to Boost Trade Along Kamba Border Corridor
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kebbi Area Command, has strengthened collaboration with the Nigerien Customs to facilitate legitimate cross-border trade and ease economic hardship among communities along the Kamba–Tungan Gyado border corridor.
The development followed a meeting between officials of the Kebbi Area Command and a delegation from the Nigerien Customs (Douanes du Niger) held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the Command’s headquarters.
The engagement focused on emerging challenges affecting trade along the corridor, with particular emphasis on improving trade facilitation, increasing revenue and providing economic relief to communities on both sides of the border.
The meeting was attended by the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Kebbi Area Command, Comptroller Mahmoud Matawalle Ibrahim; Comptroller Douanes du Dosso, Niger Republic, Abdoulaye Vincent; Chairman, Dendi Ganda, Sarkin Shikon Kamba, Mamuda Zarumai; Secretary-General, SNAT Gaya, Abubakar Inusa; and other stakeholders.
Speaking during the engagement, Vincent commended the Kebbi Customs Area Controller for hosting the Nigerien delegation and called for stronger cooperation between the two countries’ Customs administrations.
He said the Kamba corridor had the potential to support increased legitimate trade, particularly as insecurity along routes through Burkina Faso and Togo, coupled with the prevailing diplomatic situation with Benin Republic, had disrupted established trade routes.
According to him, greater utilisation of the Kamba corridor for legitimate exports would not only increase government revenue but also help cushion the economic difficulties faced by communities along the route and beyond.
Responding, Comptroller Ibrahim welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the Nigerien Customs to promote legitimate cross-border trade.
He pledged to intensify sensitisation of traders and other stakeholders on Customs procedures while encouraging greater use of the Kamba corridor.
The CAC noted that increased legitimate trade would have wider economic benefits, including improved revenue generation, job creation and better livelihoods for border communities.
Ibrahim also disclosed plans to visit the Nigerien Customs Command in Dosso as part of efforts to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and improve trade facilitation between both countries.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Shikon Kamba, Mamuda Zarumai, expressed appreciation to the CAC for creating an enabling environment for stakeholders to conduct legitimate business.
He commended the Customs Area Controller for demonstrating concern for the welfare and economic wellbeing of the people of Kamba and offered prayers for the success of the renewed collaboration between the two Customs administrations.
The meeting underscores ongoing efforts by Customs authorities on both sides of the border to promote lawful trade, strengthen regional economic cooperation and improve the livelihoods of border communities.
