The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has decried the nonpayment of nine months salaries owed its members by the management of Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN).
According to a press statement signed by MWUN Secretary General, Oniha Erazua, several efforts made by the Union to make their request known to the Ag. Registrar of CRFFN, Ms Uromta Chinyere was disregarded and proved abortive.
Erazua added that despite the Union’s willingness to collaborate with the management of CRFFN, the Council is not faithful to paying the union members their salaries.
He stated that MWUN if CRFFN does not pay the arrears of the nine months salaries owed its members, the Union will withdraw the services of its members from all maritime organizations nationwide.
The statement reads “Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) wish to bring to the notice of the general public the continued nonpayment of nine months of salaries owed our members by the management of CRFFN.
“We wish to further inform the general public that MWUN, as a responsible Union had gone through and exhausted all the processes of reaching an amicable resolution of the matter including issuing various ultimatum(s) which were rudely ignored by the Ag. Registrar of CRFFN, disregard of resolutions reached at several mediatory meetings, last of which was the one held in Abuja on Wednesday 18th September 2024 and a host of other infractions of the rights of our members to payment of their wages .
“We are even more dismayed that the management of CRFFN in nonchalant disregard to one of the resolutions of our meetings which states that going forward, payment of staff salaries shall be the first line of charge and available funds shall be used for this purpose and there shall be no more diversion of available funds into any other expense where staff salaries are yet to be paid, still went ahead to organize a kangaroo training for some selected staff(s) living behind a homogeneous cache of unpaid salary(s).
“It is therefore worrisome to us as a Union that despite extending a hand of fellowship and showing willingness to engage and collaborate with management of CRFFN led by the Ag. Registrar ,the CRFFN still conduct its affairs in ways inimical to the well-being and welfare of our members while trampling on the rights of our members to the gainful enjoyment of their earned salaries.
“Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria MWUN can no longer stand idly by and watch the impunity been put on show by CRFFN .MWUN use this medium to put the general public on notice that should the management of CRFFN continue to withhold the nine months of salaries owed our members who are their employees, we will have no other alternatives than to totally withdraw the services of our members in the Nigerian Port Authority, Dock labour, Shipping and Freight Forwarding Agency and seamen from all ports, jetties ,terminals and Oil and Gas platforms nationwide. All authorities to please take notes.”
