Kano/Jigawa Customs Makes Seizure of 2,179kg of Pangolin Scales in Collaboration With WJC

... Arrests One Suspect


Customs effort at preventing trafficking in endangered species has been reiterated by the Kano/Jigawa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service with a seizure of pangolin scales weighing 2,179kg with the arrest of a suspect

IMG 20241217 WA0049Controller of the Command, Comptroller Dauda Ibrahim Chana who reiterated the service resolve to curb smuggling of all sorts including wild life disclosed that this is the third major seizure of pangolin scales by Nigeria Customs Service in collaboration with the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC) in 2024.

IMG 20241217 WA0051Comptroller Chana attributed the operational breakthrough to collaboration and support while disclosing that the Federal Operations Unit, Zone D participated in achieving the seizure and arrest of one suspect in connection with the crime.

According to a press release issued in Kano by Customs Public Relations Officer, Saidu Nuruddeen, Comptroller Chana was quoted saying ” this operation demonstrates the power of collaboration between the NCS and WJC and it also reaffirms NCS’ dedication to combating wildlife trafficking”

The release disclosed that the seizure was made on December 5, 2024 and the suspect was arrested in Mubi, Adamawa State.

According to the release “Since this partnership began, 21,582 kilograms of pangolin scales have been seized in Nigeria by Nigeria Customs Sevice as a result of the NCS and WJC partnership. 54% of this amount or 11,673.2 kilograms has been seized in 2024 alone, and 4,473.2kg of this is by the NCS Kano /Jigawa command

“The WJC provided actionable intelligence, supported the investigation with their expertise and followed up with the NCS enforcement operation. A trained Customs enforcement team, led by Kano/Jigawa Command successfully intercepted and effected the arrest and seizure from two warehouses in Mubi.

“The perpetrators will be prosecuted accordingly and the service will leave no stone unturned to further apprehend anyone connected to this criminal network.

“The CAC commends the bravery and professionalism of the team of officers deployed, and expertise of WJC. He, most importantly appreciates the support of the Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR and his management team, while promising to continue to work tirelessly to prevent the trafficking of endangered species and all non-custom goods” the release stated

The Kano/Jigawa Command of the NCS has been at the fore of combating wildlife smuggling and it’s Controller was recently recognised and awarded for this and other outstanding feats
