The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of self-acclaimed prophet, Evans Eshun, popularly known as Ebo Noah, whose apocalyptic prophecies and ark project have stirred widespread controversy in recent months.
In a statement published on its official website on Wednesday, the police said Eshun was arrested by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Cyber Vetting Team as part of ongoing efforts to monitor and address cyber-related activities, especially in the buildup to New Year Eve religious services.
“The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of a man identified as Evans Eshun, also known as Ebo Noah, by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Cyber Vetting Team,” the statement read in part.
According to the police, the arrest formed part of nationwide efforts to curb the spread of online content and public statements “capable of causing fear, panic or disorder.”
While the specific allegations against Eshun were not disclosed, the statement noted that his arrest followed recent warnings issued by security agencies against individuals making public prophecies or declarations likely to incite public unrest.
“Police confirmation follows reports circulating online suggesting the arrest was linked to warnings issued by security agencies regarding the conduct of individuals making public declarations and prophecies that could cause fear or public disorder,” the statement added.
Authorities said Eshun is currently in custody to assist with investigations. No formal charges, court appearances, or bail conditions have been announced. Police sources also hinted that no other persons have been declared wanted in connection with the case at this time.
The statement further urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, emphasising that “investigations are ongoing and any legal action will follow due process.” The suspect, it said, remained presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Over the past year, Ebo Noah gained notoriety after claiming to have received a divine revelation about an impending global flood that would “wipe out the world.”
He went viral in August after unveiling a massive wooden ark, which he said was constructed under divine instruction as part of preparations for a predicted “three-year rainfall” beginning on December 25. The project, dubbed ‘The Ebo Noah Ark’, drew local and international attention, with curious visitors trooping to view the structure.
However, in a video statement released last Thursday, the preacher said the prophesied disaster did not occur because of what he described as “a new revelation following intense prayers, fasting and consultations with other religious leaders.”
According to him, the new divine message showed that “the number of people seeking refuge in the ark far exceeded its capacity,” prompting him to plead with God for mercy. He claimed that God granted “more time to build additional arks” before the supposed judgement.
The Ghana Police Service, meanwhile, reiterated its long-standing caution against fear-inducing prophecies, particularly during end-of-year religious gatherings, stressing that such conduct may be investigated under existing public order, communication, and cybercrime laws.
