Chana, Kano, Jigawa Customs Controller Wins ‘CGC Award for Service Excellence’

Comptroller Dauda Ibrahim Chana, Customs Area Controller for Kano/Jigawa Command has been honoured with the Comptroller General of Customs Special Award for Service Excellence for his outstanding performance.

Under Comptroller Chana, customs operation in Kano, which is the commercial capital of Northern Nigeria and it’s neighbouring Jigawa State have received an unprecedented boost with trade facilitation resulting in increase in revenue collection.

Chana has proven to be a turnaround leader with groundbreaking revenue collection difference which has translated into a win-win situation for the federal government, the two state governments of Kano and Jigawa and the organised private sectors under his area of responsibility

Factories operating under Chana’s area of responsibility have been properly captured for excise duty collection with proper monitoring for compliance relying on technology provided by the customs headquarters.


Chana’s commitment to service is demonstrated in the leadership he is providing for genuine trade without compromising government policy, especially as they affect special economic areas like the Kano Free Trade Zone .

In the third quarter collection, Chana achieved a revenue generation in excess of N78b . This shows a sharp increase above third quarter 2023 collection with over N45 billion which represents a 137% increment.

There has also been a higher level of anti smuggling activities evident by massive seizures of prohibited items from smugglers. Comptroller Chana has also succeeded in enlisting the support of traditional rulers, community leaders, trading organisations in robust customs community relations.

Notable seizures and arrests made recently was the interception of 2,293 tons of pangolin scales and arrest of two suspects which was a commendable feat towards wildlife protection. The Kano pangolin scales seizure was part of the 9,493 kg total volume handed over to the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC) by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi in Lagos.

He had earlier supervised the handing over of seized medicament to the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

On September 10, 2024 at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Chana coordinated the interception of three big brown cartons containing 1880 pieces of ENOX 4000 anti -xa iu/0.4ml injection syringes with injection bottles.

He also handed over to NAFDAC one sack containing 750 pieces of Otrivin bottles of 15ml each. He has enshrined a record of fighting smuggling without casualties either on the side of his officers and the people.

As a team player, he has kept a growing working relationship with various government security services and regulatory bodies for intelligence sharing and joint operations where and when necessary.

Noted for achieving voluntary compliance through regular interactions with stakeholders, Comptroller Chana has maintained steady touch with the governors of the two states of Kano and Jigawa

Chana’s award has been widely acknowledged as well deserved following the numerous achievements that have trailed his performance as Customs Area Controller for Kano/Jigawa Command

In the same category, the Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu and Customs Area Controller for Oyo/Osun Comman, Comptroller Benjamin Oramalugo were also awarded with the CGC Award for Excellence in Service
