The Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) has congratulated the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council, describing the achievement as a major boost to Nigeria’s international standing in customs administration.
In a statement jointly signed on Thursday by MARCON President, Ismail Aniemu, and Secretary, Olamide Osho, the association said Adeniyi’s re-election reflects the confidence reposed in his leadership by customs administrations across the world and validates the transformative reforms he has championed within the Nigeria Customs Service.
MARCON noted that the renewed mandate is not only a personal accomplishment for the Customs boss but also a significant milestone for Nigeria and the African continent, as it further strengthens the country’s voice in shaping international customs policies and global trade facilitation.
According to Aniemu, Adeniyi’s leadership has earned global recognition through his commitment to modernising customs administration, improving operational efficiency and promoting international cooperation.
“Your re-election as Chairperson of the WCO Council is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent. It is a clear demonstration of the confidence the international customs community has in your vision, competence and reform-driven leadership,”
The association observed that Adeniyi’s emergence and subsequent re-election have further raised the profile of the Nigeria Customs Service on the global stage, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing influence in international customs administration.
It added that the Service has witnessed significant reforms under his leadership, including the deployment of the B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System, improved revenue generation, enhanced anti-smuggling operations, accelerated digital transformation and stronger stakeholder engagement.
MARCON said the reforms have repositioned the Nigeria Customs Service among Africa’s leading customs administrations while promoting transparency, operational efficiency and the ease of doing business.
The association also expressed optimism that Adeniyi’s second term as Chairperson of the WCO Council would strengthen international customs cooperation, drive global customs modernisation and create greater opportunities for Nigeria to contribute to the development of international trade policies.
MARCON wished the CGC a successful tenure and reaffirmed its support for ongoing reforms aimed at building a more efficient, transparent and globally competitive Nigeria Customs Service.
