President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
The extension follows the expiration of Adeniyi’s previous tenure, which was due to end on August 1, 2026.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension is intended to enable the Customs chief to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project and ensure a smooth and orderly leadership transition within the Service.
During the transition period, Adeniyi will work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and facilitate the compulsory retirement of officers who have either attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, a position in which he has overseen key reforms aimed at improving trade facilitation, revenue generation, and customs modernisation.
The latest extension is expected to provide continuity for ongoing reforms while paving the way for a structured succession process within the Nigeria Customs Service.
