The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has given all domestic airlines operating in the country a seven-day deadline to incorporate a mandatory Special Needs/Assistance request feature on their ticket reservation platforms to better cater for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) and passengers with disabilities.
According to a press release signed by Michael Achimugu, for the Director-General of Civil Aviation Captain Chris Najomo, the directive applies to all ticket sales channels, including online and telephone reservations and is aimed at ensuring full compliance with existing aviation regulations on accessibility and inclusive air travel.
The NCAA stated that airlines are required to conspicuously include a designated field or column on their ticket booking portals through which passengers can request special assistance or notify airlines of specific needs before completing ticket purchases.
The Authority recalled that it had earlier issued a similar directive to airlines in a letter dated 13 April 2022 (Reference No. NCAA/CPD/585/1/22), but noted the need to reiterate the requirement in line with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig. CARs) 2023.
Specifically, Part 19.12.3.1 of the regulations mandates airlines, travel agents and tour operators to provide travellers with the opportunity to request assistance at the point of booking, actively enquire if any passenger within a booking party may require assistance at the airport or during flight operations, and ensure such provisions are available across all ticket sales platforms.
The seven-day deadline takes effect from the date of receipt of the directive .It warned that failure to comply may attract regulatory enforcement actions in line with applicable aviation regulations.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive, accessible and safe air travel for all passengers.
