The Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, has recorded a transformative year of achievements between August 2024 and August 2025, underscoring its strategic importance to Nigeria’s MaritimeIndustry and affirming its role as a leading gateway for trade in West and Central Africa.
With consistent backing from the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho and the Management, the Port has made strides across key performance areas including operational efficiency, stakeholder engagement, infrastructure, and safety.
According to the Port Manager, Lagos Port Complex, Mr. Lawal Adebowale, one of the most notable accomplishments under Dantsoho’sleadership in the last one year was the successful reception of MV KOTA OASIS, an LNG powered container vessel operated by Pacific International Lines (PIL).
The ship berthing at Apapa Porton on June 16, 2025 marked a historic milestone as the first dual fuel vessel of its kind to dock at a Nigerian Port, solidifying Lagos Port Complex’s pioneering status in green and sustainable shipping within the region.
Lawal said improved collaboration among Terminal Operators, Shipping Companies, Security Agencies, and the Port Authority has enhanced operational flow and boosted confidence among stakeholders. Through transparent communication and structured engagement, the Port community has fostered an environment of trust and collective progress.
He also reeled out Port Management‘ efforts to decongest and manage traffic around the Port corridor which have yielded tangible results, thanks to the integration of Terminal Barriers with the ETO Electronic Call-Up System.
This innovation he said has streamlined truck movement, reduced bottlenecks, and improved access control, while reinforcing Port security. Infrastructure upgrades are also ongoing, including the rehabilitation of the Port’s Multipurpose Hall, a project set to provide a modern venue for staff activities and stakeholder events.
The Port Manager, disclosed that operational performance indicators reveal a significant improvement in vessel turnaround time, reflecting heightened efficiency and a competitive edge within the sub-region. The Port’s commitment to health, safety, and emergency preparedness was evident in its swift response to three fire incidents during the year. The responses ensured minimal disruption and reinforced confidence in the crisis management capabilities, while further investments in firefighting appliances are underway to bolster this readiness.
On employee morale and motivation, he said reward initiatives has encouraged excellence across the workforce, with three officers honoredas “Best Employees” in the first half of 2025.
