The Area Controller of the Tin can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller Frank Onyeka has described his deployment as to Nigeria’s second largest port as a unique posting showing the Comptroller General’s believe in his ability as a revenue officer.
Speaking to JournalNG Editorial Team, during a visit to his office on April 15, 2025, Comptroller Onyeka said he was the first Area Controller who assumed office at the command on acting capacity with a Deputy Comptroller rank without being a Controller in any area before the deployment
According to him, this was a rare confidence by the CG of Customs who found him worthy for the task. He attributed the revenue and trade facilitation achievements of THIS Command to the proactive approach and collaborative efforts with the Comptroller General of Customs ,Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
He added that the confidence has spurred him into working harder to deliver in revenue collection, trade facilitation and anti smuggling. He said his commitment is to work for the economic benefit of Nigeria and contribute to the NCS drive for government revenue without compromising national security
He said since his assumption of office, he has eradicated the issue of multiple alerts on cargo declaration to achieve faster clearance of compliant cargoes and has improved on stakeholders engagement including getting necessary and timely feedback for improvement
Comptroller Onyeka said that he has worked closely with the CGC to identify and address the root causes of multiple alerts, which had become a major challenge for the command. Through a combination of process reviews, stakeholder engagement, and technology-driven solutions, the command has been able to streamline its operations and reduce the incidence of multiple alerts.
He noted that the command has witnessed a significant increase in revenue generation under his leadership as CAC, stating that despite the challenges inherent in the role, he has remained resolute in his commitment to maximizing revenue collection for the nation.
According to him, his approach to revenue generation has been centered on robust engagement with stakeholders and sister agencies, and by fostering strong relationships with these key players, he has been able to identify and block revenue leakages, streamline processes, and enhance overall efficiency.
Speaking further, the Tin Can Island Port Command Controller said the outcome of this strategic approach has been impressive, with the command recording a notable surge in revenue collection and collecting a total sum of ₦347,935,672.475.5 billion in the first quarter of 2025, making a significant improvement compared to the same period in 2024, which saw a revenue collection of ₦303,791,379,473.67 billion.
He assured that as the command continues to operate under his leadership, it is expected that the momentum gained in revenue generation will be sustained, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth and development.
In respect to their annual Port Industry Town Hall Meeting that will hold on 17th April, 2025 , at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos., Onyeka pledged participation and described the topic as timely for efficient and optimal operations of the ports in Nigeria
The Publisher of , Nigeria’s most consistent maritime magazine, JournalNG , Mr. Ismail Aniemu appreciated Comptroller Onyeka for receiving himself and his team.He explained that the Port Industry Town Hall Meeting started in 2021 and this year, the theme of this year’s edition is ” Bridging the Gap on 24-hour Port Operation.”
He added that the Port Industry Town Hall Meeting is an avenue where stakeholders are brought together to discuss on port-related matters, find a way upon time-not-issues, and come out with a communique which is an advisory to government on how best to make the port more efficient.
Mr. Aniemu commended Comptroller Onyeka for being dedicated to overseeing customs operation in Nigeria’s second largest port .
