The Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have renewed their strategic partnership with the signing of a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening maritime safety, security and law enforcement across Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The agreement, signed at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja, builds on a partnership that dates back to 2007 and has been renewed successively to address emerging challenges in Nigeria’s maritime space.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola; Principal Staff Officers and senior officials of both organisations.
Under the renewed framework, the two institutions will deepen cooperation in maritime security, marine pollution control, search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, intelligence and information sharing, hydrography, as well as training and professional capacity development.
The partnership is expected to strengthen maritime domain awareness and improve the coordinated response to incidents at sea, with direct implications for the safety of ships, crew, cargo, passengers and navigation within Nigeria’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mobereola described the renewal as a reaffirmation of the commitment of both institutions to the security, safety, sustainability and prosperity of Nigeria’s maritime domain and Blue Economy.
He said Nigeria’s economic wellbeing was closely linked to the sea, making the protection of the nation’s maritime space a national imperative, while acknowledging the Nigerian Navy’s critical role in supporting NIMASA’s statutory responsibilities.
Also speaking, the CNS described the renewed agreement as a significant milestone in a long-standing relationship founded on shared national interests.
Abbas expressed confidence in NIMASA’s leadership and reaffirmed the Navy’s readiness to provide operational support towards the effective discharge of the Agency’s mandate throughout the five-year period.
A key feature of the renewed MoU is the establishment of mechanisms to ensure accountability and sustained implementation. Both organisations will subject the agreement to regular institutional review and jointly convene an annual Maritime Safety and Security Conference to assess progress and address emerging challenges.
The framework also provides for timely intelligence and information exchange, appropriate utilisation of relevant facilities and capabilities, and collaboration in other areas of mutual interest.
The renewed partnership comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen inter-agency coordination as a critical component of securing its maritime domain, protecting legitimate maritime activities and creating a safer environment for investment and the sustainable development of the Blue Economy.
For the Nigerian Navy and NIMASA, the agreement is expected to move their long standing cooperation beyond institutional commitments towards more coordinated and measurable outcomes in maritime safety and security.
