The Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made seizures of various prohibited and smuggled items with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N3,574,435,248.08
The Command also generated N90,066,164.00 revenue in July 2026 from baggage assessments, auctions of perishable items, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other charges.
The Acting Customs Area Controller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Oladapo Afeni, disclosed this on Thursday, August 13, 2026, during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Idiroko, Ogun State.
Afeni said the revenue is part of the Command’s contribution to the Federal Government’s revenue drive, while stressing that the NCS remained committed to facilitating legitimate trade and combating smuggling along the nation’s borders.
According to the Controller, the seized items include 2,339 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 70 cartons of basmati rice, 6,035 parcels of Ghana Loud/Indica, 30 bags of foreign sugar, 11,450 litres of PMS in kegs, 1,750 litres of PMS in drums and 30 kegs of diesel.
Other seized items comprised 100 bags of fertiliser, 67 bales of second-hand clothing, 2,674 pieces of new shorts and trousers, 3,760 pieces of new tops, 85 fire extinguishers, 480 cartons of Pure Haven drinks, 53 packages of oats, 47 cartons of cosmetics, hair accessories, surgical shoes and 127 new purses.
The Acting Controller said the seizures demonstrates the Command’s intensified campaign against smuggling, particularly the illegal importation of foreign rice and illicit drugs.
He explained that smuggled agricultural products undermine local farmers, manufacturers and investors, warning that the continued influx of foreign rice through illegal routes could frustrate the Federal Government’s efforts to achieve food security and self-sufficiency.
On the fight against illicit drugs, Afeni said the Command had intercepted large quantities of cannabis and other hard drugs and would continue to collaborate with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to dismantle smuggling networks.
He disclosed that from January 2026 to date, the Command had handed over 32,412 parcels of hard drugs and 92 sacks of raw Cannabis sativa to the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command for further investigation and prosecution.
The latest consignment of seized narcotics was formally handed over to the NDLEA in line with established operational procedures and legal frameworks.
Beyond anti-smuggling operations, the Command recorded significant export activity, with a total export volume of 10,110 metric tonnes valued at N2,594,078,654 Free On Board (FOB).
Afeni said the major commodities driving the Command’s export performance include white talc, crushed thermal coal and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
He said the Command would sustain intelligence-led operations and the use of modern technology to frustrate smugglers, adding that Ogun I would remain hostile to economic saboteurs who attempt to use the border corridor to bring prohibited goods into Nigeria.
Comptroller Afeni called on traditional rulers, youth leaders and residents of border communities to support the fight against smuggling by providing useful information on suspicious activities.
He also urged Nigerians to patronise locally produced goods, particularly agricultural products, stressing that supporting local industries would help create jobs, strengthen the economy and promote national self-reliance.
Afeni commended officers of the Command for their commitment and also appreciated the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and support.
