The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for about 25 days to allow for essential repairs and resurfacing.
In a press release signed by Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, dated October 8, 2026, FAAN said the closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, subject to final confirmation.
The authority attributed the planned closure to the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks, which have been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
According to FAAN, the rehabilitation project will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
The authority said the intervention is particularly important ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger traffic during the Christmas season.
FAAN also disclosed that the project would include runway extension works to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region grows.
The Authority added that the expansion is aimed at improving passenger comfort and facilitating a smoother travel experience.
The authority advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
FAAN said it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and communicate the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.
The authority appealed to airport users to cooperate with it during the rehabilitation exercise, describing the project as essential to ensuring safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
