The Nigeria Police in collaboration with Skyheight Success Consult, has organised a two-day sensitisation workshop for officers at the Edo Command to educate them on post-retirement planning.
Addressing participants at the workshop, the Edo State Commissioner of police, CP Mohammed Dankwara said that it was sad to see officers living an unpleasant life after retirement.
He noted that the programme would help them to prepare and get requisite information on the ethics of retirement.
“My sincere appreciation to the Inspector General of Police for approving such programmes for Officers and also to the coordinator of the programme. I also a benefactor of this programme.
“It is disheartening to see our police officers today, living a good life while in service but after retirement, they cannot sustain it which is very bad. Sometimes it leads to depression, ill health and untimely of some officers because, they can no longer attend to their responsibilities.
“So this programme is to address all these issues and to teach these officers about retirement which is very important”, he said.
In his remarks, the coordinator of the consultancy firm and resource person for the workshop, Eugene Onyibo, charged the officers to adjust their mindsets to the new life of retirement and engage in healthy lifestyles to help them live longer.
He added that retirement is a reality, which is inevitable.
“This programme has been existing since 2012, it is a call to order by police officers because there is life after retirement from the police force.
“The quality of life of some retired police officers is nothing to write home about compared to other security agencies. The programme has been able to transform officers since the past eleven years,” he noted.
The programme, themed “Empowerment for Safe, Happy and Successful Retirement” took place in Benin city, and had in attendance officers of the Police Force and other stakeholders.
