The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing fight against violent crime, announcing the arrest of 50 suspects linked to terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery across the country.
At a press briefing held on April 13, 2026, at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) headquarters in Abuja, police authorities revealed the recovery of a significant cache of high-grade weapons, including an anti-aircraft launcher and 17 rifles.
According to the Force, the operations, carried out by the FID-IRT form part of a coordinated nationwide offensive targeting criminal syndicates that have posed persistent threats to national security. Since January 2026, operatives have dismantled multiple clandestine networks, recovering arms and equipment such as live ammunition, communication devices, magazines, mobile phones, and a vehicle used in criminal activities.
One of the most notable successes was the takedown of a 33-member gang implicated in terrorism, cattle rustling, and a violent attack on a Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara State. The police also recorded a major breakthrough in Taraba State, where suspects linked to the killing of three officers attached to the Donga Divisional Headquarters were apprehended.
In the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas, security efforts led to the arrest of criminal groups involved in “one-chance” abductions, car burglaries, and the operation of illegal checkpoints. Authorities say these arrests have significantly disrupted organised crime activities and improved public safety.
In a related development, operatives acting on intelligence arrested 25-year-old Nasiru Ibrahim in Benue State. He was found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and eight rounds of live ammunition.
Investigations revealed links to a notorious bandit identified as Janari, who is currently at large. Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend him and dismantle the wider network.
Speaking on the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to strengthening national security. He noted that the latest achievements underscore the dedication of police operatives in combating crime and ensuring justice.
The Police further disclosed that several suspects are set to be charged in court, while investigations continue to track down accomplices and recover additional illegal arms.
Reiterating its mandate, the Nigeria Police Force assured citizens of its resolve to uphold the rule of law and protect lives and property through enhanced intelligence gathering and strategic operations nationwide.
