Cargo movements in and out of the Apapa and Tin Can Island Port Complex in Lagos went unhindered today, Thursday August 1,2024 despite the ongoing nationwide protests that affected movements and businesses.
When our reporter visited the ports import and export laden consignment laden trucks were seen going in and out of the largest ports in Nigeria.
A senior official of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our reporter that there is full presence of the organisation staff at work attending to port users.
He noted that the number of persons coming to the port today were fewer than normal due to the fear of the likelihood of protest affecting port operations.
The NPA official expressed optimism that the number of persons visiting the Lagos will likely increase in days to come as those that came on the first day of the protest will likely tell others.
Also speaking to our reporter, Usman Abubakar Public Relations Officer for Apapa Customs Command confirmed regular port activities by the Nigeria Customs Service.
Abubakar, a Chief Superintendent of Customs said work is ongoing normally with the customs. He added that all normal customs functions of revenue collection, trade facilitation and anti smuggling activities are were not in anyway impeded by the protest
Earlier in the week, the Customs Area Controller of Apapa, Babatunde Olomu had convened a stakeholders’ meeting to reassure port users in Apapa that there won’t be service disruption at the Lagos Ports for the period of the protest and beyond.
