Some Nigerians have taken a swipe at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over its planned 13th sports fiesta to hold in Abuja in April.
Reacting to a post on the official NNPCL handle on Facebook, respondents described the company as being insensitive and not alive to its core duties at a trying time for the country.
Chibuikem Paul said the company has averted its focus from its primary responsibility even at a time when the masses are going through tough time as a result of the hike in the price of petroleum products.
” The masses are going through hardship because of hike in prices of petroleum products and not just fuel alone.NNPC should focus on its job of restoring stability in its area”.
In his opinion, Ejikeme Augustine said” the issue of refusal for modular refinery to produce fuel should be addressed”.
Babajide Malcolm commented that NNPCL should focus on tackling hardship and insecurity in the country.
” This is not the type of course NNPCL should be promoting with the height of public outrage and outcry of hardship and insecurity in the nation”.
Yekeen Abdulkabir described the said sports sponsorship as a misplaced priority and a means to misuse funds .
” It is a misplaced priority and a waste of resources because the refinery at Port Harcourt has not been functioning”.
Similarly, Bide Chimobi said the sports fiesta is a misplaced priority as the masses cannot afford petrol.
Moses Attah , opined that one factor that is affecting Nigeria is lack of emotional intelligence.
” Let us stop all these propaganda and and go back to our drawing board or manuscript. This event is still aimed at empowering some groups.Nigeria should be serious for once .Lack of emotional intelligence is killing our country “.
Volunteer Agbor however said the hardship in the country is enough reason for any reasonable person to know what Nigerians need at the moment.
According to the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, this year’s edition of the biennial event, themed “Healthy Workforce, Productive Organisation,” symbolises NNPC Ltd.’s belief in the integral role of physical well-being towards enhancing organisational productivity among employees.
He added that the tournament, which is set to showcase friendly yet spirited contests among the three teams, will also serve as a platform for selecting NNPC Ltd.’s potential flagbearers at the forthcoming Nigeria Oil & Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) in April 2024, where the Company will defend its title of Overall Winner, a feat it has maintained over the years.
” The event will see the Company’s employees competing in 13 games, namely football, basketball, volleyball, chess, squash, scrabble, 8-ball pool, golf, tennis, table tennis, badminton, swimming and athletics”.
“The one-week event, which will climax on Friday, 23rd February 2024, will also feature a novelty match that will see the NNPC Ltd. Football Team trade tackles with the Ex-Super Eagles Stars, led by Nigeria’s legendary Captain, Austin JJ Okocha.
” This year, the six NNPC Ltd. zones have undergone a restructuring, following their consolidation into three teams that represent the Company’s three core values of Integrity (Port Harcourt/Benin), Excellence (Lagos/Warri), and Sustainability (Abuja/Kaduna)”.
