The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) commitment to supporting the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA), stressing that institutions dedicated to recognising excellence deserve the backing of all Nigerians.
Adeniyi gave the assurance on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, when the Acting Secretary of the Nigerian National Merit Award, Mercy Musa, led a management delegation on a courtesy visit to the Comptroller-General at the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.
He described the NNMA as a vital institution for promoting academic and professional excellence, noting that honouring exceptional Nigerians would inspire younger generations to embrace hard work, innovation and dedication as the path to success.
“What we are doing is so important because we want the younger generations of Nigerians to know that there is no shortcut to greatness.
They have to put in hard work and commitment. When a government agency recognises discoveries, innovations and excellence, it deserves the support of all Nigerians,” Adeniyi said.
The Customs boss recalled the Service’s longstanding support for the Award Office and assured the delegation that the NCS would continue to explore lawful avenues to strengthen its partnership with the institution and support its activities.
Earlier, the Acting Secretary of the NNMA, Mercy Musa, congratulated Adeniyi on the extension of his tenure as Comptroller-General of Customs and his election as Chairman of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council, describing the milestones as a testament to his diligence, professionalism and outstanding leadership.
Musa explained that the NNMA, established in 1979, remains Nigeria’s highest honour for intellectual and professional excellence. She noted that only 79 Nigerians have received the prestigious award since its inception, underscoring its exclusivity and national significance.
