Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the arrest of those responsible for the death of police officers during a recent procession by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, known as the Shi’ite group.
The clash, which took place in Abuja on Sunday, resulted in the death of two officers and left three others hospitalized.
The police reported that the group attacked their personnel during the procession, while the Shi’ites claimed that police officers killed and injured several of their members in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory.
In response, the police in a statement by the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi condemned the attack; stating that the perpetrators have “murdered peace.”
“The Nigeria Police Force has vehemently condemned the unprovoked attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the Shi’ite group, on police personnel in Abuja on August 25, 2024,’’ the statement read.
He said already the police have arrested 97 suspects and recovered weapons used in the attack as part of their ongoing investigation.
