The suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded at a correctional facility in Ilaro, Ogun State, following his arraignment before the Ifo Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
Charged with assault and related offenses, the monarch was denied immediate release after failing to meet the bail conditions set by the court.
Oba Ogunjobi appeared in court to face a three-count charge filed by the Nigeria Police Force, including conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
The charges on the traditional ruler resulted from a viral video allegedly showing the monarch verbally and physically assaulting Areola Abraham, an elderly chief in his community.
In the viral video which stirred a barrage of criticism on social media, Oba Ogunjobi is seen berating Abraham, accusing him of conspiracy and threatening him with severe consequences.
During the court proceedings, Oba Ogunjobi pleaded not guilty to all charges. Despite his plea, the presiding magistrate granted bail set at ₦5 million, with additional conditions requiring two sureties who must each deposit ₦5 million.
As of the time of reporting, the monarch was unable to meet these conditions, leading to his remand at the Ilaro correctional centre.
The case has been adjourned to March 6 for further hearing, allowing both the prosecution and the defence adequate time to prepare their arguments.
