The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, contrary to earlier concerns following reports of smoke within the terminal.
According to a statement issued by the FAAN Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, preliminary findings revealed that the smoke observed in the affected area was caused by the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system and not by a fire incident.
According to the authority, the reason for the unexpected activation of the fire suppression system is currently under investigation.
The clarification comes after FAAN had earlier announced that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was responding to what was initially reported as a fire incident at the terminal.
Agbebire assured the public that normal operations have resumed at Terminal 2, while a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the system’s activation.
He expressed appreciation to passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the incident, reiterating its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of airport operations across the country.
