Nigerian Music Legend, Onyeka Onwenu, Dies at 72


Famous Nigerian music legend, Onyeka Onwenu is reportedly dead. She was said to have slumped after performing at the birthday party of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals in Lagos on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024.

It was gathered that she was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos where she was pronounced dead.

Onyeka Onwenu was born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. She began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,”  in 1981. She has since released numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”

The popular singer would be remembered for some of her evergreen Albums such as Dancing in the Sun, Morning Light and her duet with King Sunny Ade’s Choice. She also featured in blockbuster movies such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Lion Heart, among others.

Onyeka Onwenu was a multifaceted Nigerian singer-songwriter, actress, human rights advocate, journalist, and politician. Renowned for her elegant presence and often referred to by the Nigerian press as the “Elegant Stallion,” she held various influential roles throughout her career.
