The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to fully implement the State Safety Programme (SSP) for Nigeria, ensuring enhanced aviation safety in line with international standards.
The Director-General, Captain Chris Najomo, stated this at the closing ceremony of the ICAO-West and Central Africa (WACAF) Regional Office’s Assistance Mission to Nigeria, held in Abuja.
The SSP is a regulatory framework mandated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to enhance safety performance and address aviation risks unique to each member state.
Captain Najomo noted that Nigeria has made significant strides in its SSP implementation, including publishing safety management regulations in Part 20 of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig. CARs), drafting the SSP manual, and developing the National Aviation Safety Plan (NASP).
He acknowledged the guidance provided by Ms Sonia Freitas of the ICAO WACAF Office, who reviewed Nigeria’s SSP Implementation Plan for compliance with ICAO’s Annex 19 safety requirements.
He explained that Ms Jailza Sylvia, Executive Director of BAGASOO, assisted in refining key documentation for effective SSP execution.
Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Captain Alex Badeh Jr emphasized the regional commitment to aviation safety.
He assured that the NSIB, in collaboration with the NCAA, would address all findings and recommendations from the mission to ensure Nigeria meets global safety standards.
