The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has raised concerns over what it described as an emerging nexus between sexual violence, ritual practices, cybercrime and other organised criminal activities, calling on journalists to intensify investigative reporting to uncover the underlying factors fueling sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Nigeria.
The agency said many cases of sexual violence are increasingly intertwined with other forms of criminality, making it imperative for the media to go beyond reporting incidents and investigate the networks, motives and socio-economic conditions driving the crimes.
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at a two-day capacity-building workshop for journalists covering SGBV, NAPTIP’s Head of Press and Public Relations Unit, Vincent Adekoye, said the media has a critical role to play in exposing the evolving nature of gender-based violence and supporting efforts to prevent the crime through accurate, ethical and investigative reporting.
He urged journalists to highlight not only the experiences of survivors but also the systemic issues, criminal syndicates and emerging trends that continue to fuel violence against women, children and other vulnerable groups across the country.
