
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has warned terminal operators and employers of seafarers and dockworkers over irregular pension remittances, threatening to take action against defaulting companies.
This information was disclosed in a press release signed by Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna.
According to the union’s President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, some ship owners and terminal operators have stopped remitting Pension Scheme Administration (PSA) for dockworkers and seafarers, violating labor laws.
The union has vowed to descend heavily on erring companies, bringing them to book for violating labor rules. MWUN warned that defaulting companies may face shutdown if the situation isn’t reversed.
Comrade Bunu emphasised that denying workers their pension rights is unlawful and unacceptable. The union’s ultimatum aims to protect members’ rights and ensure compliance with labor regulations.
The threat underscores growing concerns about labor practices in Nigeria’s maritime sector. MWUN’s stance signals a potential disruption to operations if demands aren’t met.
” The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) under the leadership of Comrade Francis Bunu Abi vows to descend heavily on Terminal Operations and Employers of Seafarers’ and Dockworkers over irregularities of Maritime Workers pensions remittance nationwide.
” The leadership of the Union recently got the wind of these employers of labour and terminal operators over their acts of irregular remittance of their employees pensions to its appropriate quarters, thereby, shortchanging the Seafarers’ and their counterparts, the Dockworkers, both categories of workers from the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.
” It was also learnt that some Ship Owners and Terminal Operators have allegedly stopped the remittance of Dockworkers and Seafarers’ PSA in there employ, which is a gross violation of labour laws.
” Given this backdrop, the President -General of the Union, Comrade Bunu, a Maritime Expert, Seasoned Sailor and Business Administrator charged that the Union will have no other options than to descend heavily and bring to book all the earring managements of these companies working against the ethics and practices of labour rules in their various companies.
” The Delta State born labour leader made this point known, stressing that it’s unlawful to deny workers their pensions rights either by crook or hook,; and may not hesitate to call out these Concessionaires and Shipping Companies that have defaulted in the payment of the statutory pensions of the Union Members.
” Comrade Bunu also said that these erring companies in the Maritime sector would be shut down if this ugly trend is not reversed to status quo”.
