... Arrests 5 Suspects
The Sector 2 Joint Border Patrol Team covering the South West area of Nigeria has intercepted petrol worth N30,456,000m from smugglers across several areas and made N1.1b
Cordinator of the team, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Mohammed Shuaibu told reporters in Lagos on Friday that the seizures were made within four days of intelligence backed enforcement
Shuaibu said the smugglers used various means of conveyance including boats that were destroyed at the scene of the seizures. Other means of conveyance seized along with the petroleum products are cars with improvised bunkers and tricycles.
Shuaibu said These crimes have multiple effects such as; undermining national security through the movements of illicit goods including drugs, weapons, and human trafficking, across the international borders, which impacts negatively on the economy by depleting the nation’s revenue base through evasion of duties and taxes.
Giving a breakdown of the seizures made Shuaibu said the goods were seized and deposited at Seme, Ogun I, Ogun II, Oyo/Osun and Ikeja Government Warehouses.
Other seizures according to him include4,051 bags of foreign parboiled rice;425 cartons of frozen chicken;912 pieces of used tyers; 85 blocks and 125 wraps of cababis sativa and 30 cars used as means of conveyance. Other seizures listed include 7 units of smuggled vehicles, 4 motorcycles and a truck
He lauded the synergy between the NCS and other agencies of government including the Nigeria Immigration Service. According to him, the Nigeria Immigration Service is a critical component of the Joint Border Patrol Team.
“We intercepted 30 illegal immigrants suspected to have violated immigration laws and were immediately handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and prosecution.
“The Sector also recovered a total of Eleven Million, Five Hundred and Ninety-Three Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventeen Naira (N11,593,217) Revenue through the issuance of Debit Notes (DN) on vehicles and other goods improperly imported into the country.
“Today we are showcasing a total of One Thousand Four Hundred and Ten (1,410) Jerry cans of PMS (30litres) each that were seized from different locations within our Area of Responsibility. These PMS were seized within one week following intensive patrol activities by the officers and men of the sector. This is only a fraction of the PMS seized by the Sector as many were deposited and auctioned in other Government Warehouses within the Zone” he said
