The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has opened an investigation into the ticket pricing patterns of selected domestic airlines following a surge in public complaints over sharp fare increases on key routes.
In a statement, the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Ondaje Ijagwu, noted growing concerns over what many passengers perceive as coordinated fare manipulation, especially on routes in the South-East and South-South as the festive season approaches.
According to the statement, the probe is focused on airlines operating along the affected routes.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Mr Tunji Bello, said the Commission would take firm action wherever evidence shows that consumer welfare or market competitiveness is being compromised.
Mr Bello, who described the recent hikes as “arbitrary,” said the Commission is expanding its review of pricing trends, the basis for the increases, and any conduct that may distort fair competition.
The FCCPC emphasised that enforcement measures will be taken against any operator found to have violated the law.
