The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has successfully generated the sum of ₦25,777,379,328.17k between March and May 2025, which represents an increase of 36.67% when compared to sum of ₦18,168,204,255.04k collected during the same period in 2024.
According to the Controller of the Command, Comptroller Joseph Olugbuyi Adelaja who disclosed this during a media press briefing on 3rd June ,2025 at the command , the Command has implemented anti-smuggling strategies that aim to leave no stone unturned and these strategies are designed to ensure the safety of individuals, facilitate legitimate trade, secure local industries and ensure compliance with existing customs laws, as the festive season approaches.
Comptroller Adelaja said the Command’s anti-smuggling activities have successfully led to the interception of a significant number of prohibited items with a Duty Paid Value of ₦335,648,500.00k for the month of May.
The seized prohibited items include: Foreign Parboiled Rice 1,698 50kg, Premium Motor Spirit130 (25 Litre Kegs) 21 Drums (125 Litres), Used Compressor 310 pieces, Used Tyres 226 pieces, Used Clothes (67 Sacks ,37 Bales ,130 Wraps), Used Shoes 4 Sacks, Cannabis Sativa 68 Wraps (39kg), Fake Pharmaceuticals (Everzorol Cream (10 Cartons) 20gm, Zytocin Oxytocin (5 Cartons) 10 Amp, Phinimal Arteether Injection (27 Cartons), Areechy Zink Sulphate (10 Cartons) 20mg, Biovilo (16 Cartons) 13.125mg), Means of Conveyance (One Used Mazda Bus (White Colour) ,One Used Toyota Sienna (Metali Blue).
The Controller said the uncustomed goods were seized in accordance with Section 245 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023. This section outlines the provisions for the seizure, detention, and condemnation of prohibited goods, as well as Schedule 3 (Import Prohibition) and Schedule 4 (Absolute Prohibition) of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET).
Comptroller Adelaja stated that in line with the policy thrust of consolidation, innovation, and collaboration set by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the Command has been approved to hand over the seized Cannabis Sativa to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the counterfeit pharmaceuticals to the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control for further investigation.
He urged the general public to keep supporting the Nigeria Customs Service by providing credible intelligence, complying with trade laws, and rejecting economic sabotage, as we approach the festive season.
“The Command has achieved remarkable success due to the dedication of our officers and men, the effective enforcement of Customs laws, and improved trade measures to facilitate legitimate trade.
“I would like to emphasize that these seizures highlight the Command’s dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s economy and ensuring adherence to fiscal and trade policies.
“The threat posed by these smuggling activities is severe, as they not only endanger public health but also negatively impact local industries and deprive the government of essential revenue needed for infrastructure development.”
