The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has been elected President of the Board of Governors of the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) for a four-year term.
Anosike’s election took place on September 10, 2026, in Cotonou, Benin, during the 24th Ordinary Session of the ACMAD Board of Governors, held alongside the 22nd African Climate Outlook Forum (ACCOF22).
His emergence places Nigeria at the helm of the continental body responsible for promoting the effective application of weather and climate information to support sustainable socio-economic development across Africa.
As President of the Board, Anosike is expected to provide strategic leadership for ACMAD while strengthening institutional governance, partnerships and the delivery of climate services across the continent.
The development also comes at a time when African countries are seeking to improve their capacity to anticipate and respond to growing weather and climate-related risks, including through the United Nations Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative.
The initiative seeks to ensure that people worldwide are protected from hazardous weather, water and climate events through early warning systems, making stronger meteorological institutions and improved access to climate information increasingly important for African countries.
Anosike’s election is also expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s role in Africa’s meteorological community and its contribution to continental efforts aimed at improving weather and climate services for the protection of lives and property, climate resilience and economic development.
The ACMAD Board session provided an opportunity for members and institutional partners to review the Centre’s progress and consider strategic priorities for its future operations and governance.
The high-level opening session was attended by the Director-General of ACMAD, Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye; Vice-President of the ACMAD Board and Director of Niger Meteorological Services, Dr. Adamou Aïssatou Sitta; Director of the African Union Commission’s Department of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy (SEBE), Mr. Harsen Nyambe; and Benin’s Minister of Living Environment and Transport, in charge of Sustainable Development, H.E. Georges Alé.
ACMAD serves as a continental institution supporting African countries with meteorological and climate information, particularly in strengthening the use of weather and climate data for decision-making and sustainable development.
