Tinubu Approves ₦46bn for Kano Airport Second Runway Reconstruction as Keyamo Commissions Domestic Terminal
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), as part of efforts to transform the facility into a globally competitive international airport.
According to Tunde Moshood, the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications who made this known in a press release, Keyamo, disclosed this on Tuesday while commissioning the remodelled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport in Kano.
Keyamo said the runway project forms part of a broader Federal Government plan to modernise Kano Airport in recognition of its strategic role as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria.
He also revealed that work has commenced on the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj Terminal, with contractors already on site.According to the minister, the Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal remodelling is one of several infrastructure projects being implemented under the Tinubu administration’s aviation modernisation agenda aimed at improving passenger comfort, operational efficiency, safety and service delivery.
Describing Kano as the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria, Keyamo said the airport had been earmarked for major upgrades because of its economic and strategic importance to the country.
He noted that the newly commissioned terminal was named after the late Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, an aviation pioneer from Kano State, in recognition of his contributions to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
“The President has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world.”, he said.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; FAAN Managing Director and Chief Executive, Olubunmi Kuku; Kano State Commissioner for Transport, Haruna Isa Dederi, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, alongside aviation stakeholders and senior government officials.
In her remarks, Kuku said the upgraded terminal reflects FAAN’s commitment to providing world-class airport infrastructure and improving passengers’ travel experience.
Ganduje commended President Tinubu and the aviation minister for prioritising aviation development in Kano, saying the ongoing projects would further strengthen the state’s position as Northern Nigeria’s leading commercial and aviation hub.
