Favour Comprehensive College has emerged champion of the maiden edition of the Afeni Inter-Secondary School Football Tournament after defeating other contenders in the final of the competition held in Idiroko, Ogun State.
The Ogun I Customs Public Relations Officer, Chado Zakari who disclosed this in a press release said the tournament, which ended on July 24, 2026, featured 12 secondary schools from border communities and was sponsored by the Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Command, Deputy Comptroller Afeni, in partnership with Jonnyyeko College of Health Science and Technology.
The competition, organised as part of the Nigeria Customs Service’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, was designed to engage young people through sports, strengthen community cohesion and discourage involvement in cross-border smuggling.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Afeni, said the initiative was aimed at using football as a platform to mentor students, promote education and help them realise their potential beyond their immediate environment.
According to him, investing in young people through sports would not only develop future talents but also steer them away from criminal activities, particularly smuggling along the border corridor.
The tournament, which ran from July 13 to July 24, engaged hundreds of students as players, match officials and spectators, with educational authorities, youth groups and community leaders lending support to the initiative.
At the end of the competition, Favour Comprehensive College lifted the trophy, while cash prizes, educational materials and sports equipment were presented to the champions, runners-up and exceptional individual performers.
Among the individual award winners, Okanlawon Al-Amin of S.S. International School finished as the tournament’s highest goal scorer with four goals. Olawale Saoban of Favour Comprehensive College was named Best Goalkeeper, while Rigobert of Holy Childhood Academy won the Best Player award.
Organisers described the successful conclusion of the maiden tournament as a significant step towards youth development and community engagement in the Idiroko border area, expressing optimism that the competition would become an annual event to discover football talents and promote positive social values.
