The Federal Government has inaugurated a seven-member National High-Level Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Steering Committee to provide strategic direction for the implementation of Nigeria’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Programme as part of efforts to decarbonise the country’s aviation sector.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo said the committee would serve as the national governance platform for the initiative, providing strategic direction, coordinating implementation efforts, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and overseeing the delivery of Nigeria’s SAF Implementation Programme.
Keyamo, who was represented by the Director of Air Transport Management in the ministry, Mohammed Ahmed Tijani, spoke on 21st July, 2026 at the inauguration of the committee during a high-level event organised by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Union (EU), and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
The event also featured the presentation of Nigeria’s National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Feasibility Study and the launch of the ICAO-supported Sustainable Aviation Fuel Business Implementation Study.
Describing the inauguration as a landmark achievement, the minister said the committee would coordinate the country’s transition to sustainable aviation fuel and ensure effective collaboration among government agencies, industry players and development partners.
According to him, sustainable aviation fuel presents Nigeria with an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions, attract investment, create jobs, strengthen energy security and unlock economic value across the agriculture, energy and industrial sectors.
He urged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with dedication, innovation and a shared commitment to national development.
Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, described the inauguration as a defining moment in Nigeria’s aviation sustainability journey, saying the country was moving from planning to implementation.
Najomo explained that the feasibility study, developed under ICAO’s Assistance, Capacity-building and Training for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (ACT-SAF) Programme with funding from the European Union and technical support from EASA, provides an evidence-based foundation for converting Nigeria’s abundant feedstock resources into commercially viable sustainable aviation fuel production.
He reaffirmed the NCAA’s commitment to serving as the secretariat of the National High-Level Sustainable Aviation Fuel Steering Committee, coordinating stakeholders and driving implementation of the programme.
Najomo also expressed appreciation to the ICAO, the European Union and EASA for their continued support towards advancing sustainable aviation development in Nigeria.
