Ghana Condemns U.S. Invasion of Venezuela, Calls for Maduro’s Release

The Government of Ghana has raised serious concerns over an  unilateral and unauthorised military invasion of Venezuela by the United States, followed by the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on  4th January,2025 , Ghana said the alleged action violates the United Nations Charter, international law, and the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of states.

Ghana said it strongly opposes the unilateral use of force and warned that assaults on international law, attempts at occupation of foreign territories and external control of natural resources could have extremely adverse implications for global stability and the international order.

The statement also expressed concern over remarks attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that the United States would run Venezuela pending a transition and invite major U.S. oil companies to operate there. Ghana said such declarations evoke colonial-era ambitions and set a dangerous precedent in the post–Second World War global order.

Ghana reaffirmed that only the Venezuelan people should freely determine their political and democratic future and restated its commitment to the principle of self-determination.

The country called for immediate de-escalation of tensions and the release of President Maduro and his wife, adding that it would continue to uphold its long standing opposition to invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid and all forms of violations of international law.
