The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has applauded the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for its far reaching business-friendly reforms, describing the new leadership under Comptroller General of Customs , Adewale Adeniyi as a turning point in relations between the aviation sector and customs.
A high level delegation of the AON Board of Trustees, led by its President, Abdulmunaf Sarina, paid a courtesy visit to the NCS headquarters on Monday, September 22, 2025, in what both sides described as the beginning of a new era of collaboration.
Welcoming the delegation, CGC Adeniyi commended the strategic role of AON in national development, stressing that their impact transcends financial investment.
He noted that the engagement extended beyond concerns over the suspended 4% Free on Board (FOB) levy, as discussions also explored broader initiatives to enhance trade facilitation. Among these, he highlighted the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme, advanced ruling for importers, and the creation of aviation desks across airports, seaports, and courier hubs. Adeniyi further clarified that the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) was a regional obligation, not a unilateral Nigerian policy.
“It is very pleasing to know that members of the Board of Trustees and indeed other members of AON are not just investors in the aviation sector, but they are also playing very strategic roles in the economy. We appreciate the expertise, knowledge, and cerebral contributions your members continue to bring into this sector.”
Speaking on behalf of the airline operators, AON Trustee and Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema, praised the Customs reforms as pro-business and collaborative, contrasting them with past adversarial relations.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing capable leaders like Adeniyi, saying the reforms have boosted operations in the aviation sector, created jobs, and supported national revenue growth.
“In the past, dealing with Customs was like climbing a mountain blindly. We often fought with Customs and took our grievances to the media. Since assuming office, CGC Adeniyi has transformed the Service into one that listens, engages, and supports businesses. This is why the AON Board decided to pay this first-ever courtesy call to say thank you and encourage you to continue in this positive direction.”
