NLC Urges Government to Embrace Dialogue in Preventing Unrest


The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the federal government to convene an inclusive stakeholders’ meeting to address the ongoing issues of unrest, hunger, poverty, and inflation affecting the country.

The call came after an emergency NEC meeting, following the invasion of the NLC Headquarters in Abuja by security agents on Wednesday August 7, 2024.

In a communiqué signed by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NEC emphasizes the need for the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with all relevant stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the nation’s economic challenges.

The communiqué further states that the NEC has resolved to initiate a forensic audit of the NLC Headquarters to assess its safety and continued suitability for use by workers.

The Council also condemned the killing of innocent protesters who were expressing their grievances against the government’s harsh policies.


The NEC called for the immediate release of all detainees and trade unionists who were arrested in their homes or at relaxation spots, stating that this would demonstrate the government’s good faith and begin the process of national healing.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers, ensuring their safety and well-being amid growing economic hardship.
