The President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade Francis Bunu Abi has emphasised the need for standardisation of the discharge book, a critical document for seafarers in Nigeria.
Speaking at the ongoing 6th Seafarers’ Branch Delegates Conference in Port Harcourt, Bunu noted that regulating the discharge book would bring it in line with international best practices and enhance the efficiency of maritime operations in Nigeria.
To achieve this, he pleaded with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to make the discharge book available at all its offices nationwide. This, he stressed will reduce bureaucratic delays and make it easier for seafarers to access the document.
The PG also called on the Federal Government to prioritise job creation for seafarers, stressing that the union’s members are skilled and trained professionals who deserve opportunities to work and contribute to the growth of the nation’s economy.
Additionally, he appealed to the Federal Government to expedite action on the payment of gratuity for aged seafarers, ensuring that they receive the benefits they deserve after years of dedicated service.
He commeded the Federal Government, Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, and NIMASA for their support and commitment to the development of the maritime industry. He disclosed that the union values the collaborative efforts of these stakeholders and looks forward to continued partnership in promoting the welfare of seafarers and the growth of the maritime sector.
