
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has reiterated its commitment to institutional growth and leadership sustainability through a Succession Planning Programme held recently in Lagos.
The initiative is part of the Council’s broader strategy to build leadership capacity, safeguard institutional memory, and guarantee a smooth transfer of responsibilities within the organisation.
Speaking at the opening of the programme, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Dr. Akutah Pius, represented by the Director of Strategic Planning and Research, Mr. Rotimi Anifowose, described succession planning as a vital process for ensuring the Council’s long-term resilience and readiness for future challenges.
He explained that the initiative aligns with the agency’s vision of fostering a dynamic leadership culture that keeps the Council effective in carrying out its role as Nigeria’s port economic regulator. He encouraged participants to embrace the training with seriousness and use the opportunity to strengthen their leadership potential for the benefit of the organization.
In his remarks, the Director, Inland Transport Services, Mr. Ahmadu Garta, commended the participants’ enthusiasm and commitment. He noted that their shared passion reflects a collective determination to advance the Council’s objectives.
Garta emphasised four essential principles for effective leadership including self-awareness , strategic thinking, skill enhancement and purposeful action as key ingredients for professional growth and institutional success.
A maritime policy analyst, Dr. Williams Azuh, also shared his perspective on leadership, describing it as the ability to deliver measurable results, earn the confidence of team members, and drive collective achievements.
Participants at the event expressed confidence that the programme would broaden their understanding of leadership and better prepare them to assume greater responsibilities in the future.
