Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has described the local government election in the state as peaceful, despite reports of violence and controversies.
Adeleke made the remark on Saturday after casting his vote in Ede North Local Government Area.
In a post on X, the governor commended residents for maintaining order and urged them to exercise their democratic rights.
“A few minutes ago, I carried out my democratic duty by casting my vote at my polling unit in Ede. I commend the good people of Osun for maintaining a peaceful and orderly atmosphere at polling units across the state,” he wrote.
Adeleke emphasised the importance of local government elections in grassroots development, stating, “Local government elections are the closest to the grassroots, and getting it right starts with electing the right leaders. Together, we will make Osun great.”
The election, held across 30 local government areas and 323 wards, has faced challenges, including violence, controversies, and legal disputes. Despite these issues, the governor expressed optimism about the process and its outcomes.
Court order
The decision follows a ruling by the Osun State High Court in Osogbo, which instructed the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to proceed with the polls as planned.
The court’s directive reinforces the state’s commitment to holding the elections, despite the AGF’s concerns.
The development comes amid ongoing debates over the timing and legality of the polls, with stakeholders urging all parties to respect the court’s decision and ensure a peaceful and credible election.
