Administrator of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, of Rivers State, Mr. Frederick Apiafi has approved the immediate implementation of COHANS salary structure to all health workers in the council.
He further pledged to provide good healthcare services and prioritised welfare of health workers, saying that good health was most important in human life, maintaining that this followed earlier directives by the State Sole administrator Vice Admiral Ibok Ette Ibas (rtd.) to all local government administrators to deliver good healthcare services to the people in the rural areas.
Apiafi, gave the approval on Friday, May 2, 2025, during a combined interactive session with the different sections of health workers in the local government area, insisting that he will stop at nothing to ensure that the health and welfare of the health workers and the people are prioritised by his administration.
“I want to emphasis that the provision of good health care services is very critical for the well-being of every human. We will do our best to solve those challenges facing health workers. I am so much concerned about wellbeing of human beings and that is the more reason I attach so much importance to health workers immediately I assumed office.
“As I speak I have approved the immediate implementation of COHANS salary structure, which previous administration failed to implement,” Apiafi said.
While soliciting their support to enable him to succeed particularly in the health sector, he equally used the forum to commend all health workers in the area for their commitment and dedication to work in spite of various challenges they are facing.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) in charge of Opobo Nkoro Council, Dr. Denis Alege highlighted the various challenges facing the health workers.
Alege appealed to the administrator to build a mini abattoir and additional public toilets to avoid open defecation and environmental pollution, while urging him to do other things aimed at motivating the health workers to enable them to discharge their duties effectively and efficiently.
The Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), Oye Christian, who gave the vote of thanks, restated that the administrator was desirous to leave positive and indelible marks, especially in the area of healthcare, promising that the council would continue to support health workers for them to do their work seamlessly.
