October 1: Maritime Workers Union Dissociates from Planned Protests


The Martime Workers Union of Nigeria has notified its members and the general public that the union is not associated with the individuals planning a nation wide protest slated to take place on October 1, 2024.

The union’s position which was disclosed in a press release by the President General Comrade Adeyanju Adewale on 30th September, 2024 stated their exemplary performance during the COVID-19 lockdown, where they overcame restrictive measures to ensure continuity, demonstrating their unwavering commitment towards the nation.

The release also stated that the planned protest was not organized by the union’s Central Working Committee and they are not obliged to abide by the call for protest

Adeyanju who personally signed the notice of non participation in the planned protest, wrote that “As a union comprising essential service provider and critical economic actors, our members are committed to delivering uninterrupted services as demonstrated during the covid 19 lock down where they worked tirelessly despite restrictive measures.

“Consequently, we wish to state clearly that whilst we do not begrudge any Nigeria citizen his or her right to and expression of themselves, the union and members do not take industrial action directives that do not emanate from the union’s recognized organs such as the Central Working Committee (CWC)”


In the same vein, Comrade Adeyanju also called on its members to maintain industrial peace, and harmony and also be vigilant to prevent miscreants from penetrating and invading ports, jetties, terminals and oil and gas platforms in the country.
