The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has issued directives to all vessels operating within Nigeria’s maritime domain, mandating strict adherence to international air pollution standards outlined in MARPOL Annex VI.
This was disclosed in a press release by the Public Relations Officer, Osagie Edward on 20th August, 2025.
MARPOL Annex VI, a protocol under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, governs the control of harmful air emissions from ships. Nigeria has incorporated this convention into national law through the Merchant Shipping Act of 2007.
Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, emphasised that ensuring environmental compliance is a cornerstone of the agency’s mission to protect Nigeria’s marine ecosystem.
“Full compliance with MARPOL Annex VI is non-negotiable. In line with our statutory mandates under the NIMASA Act and the Merchant Shipping Act of 2007, we have issued a Marine Notice to inform and guide shipowners, charterers, and shipping companies on their responsibilities. While we support shipping activities in Nigeria, we must not compromise on global environmental standards.”
The agency stated that it will bolster monitoring and enforcement mechanisms to detect and penalize violations. It also reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with maritime stakeholders to ensure that vessels operating in Nigerian waters meet international obligations concerning air pollution control.
