MWUN, Port Police Strengthen Ties to Enhance Maritime Security, Operational Efficiency

In a strategic move to deepen inter-agency cooperation and maritime security, the President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has led his national executive team on a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Western Port Authority Command, Apapa, Lagos, CP Olanrewaju Ishola.

According to the union’s Head of Media Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, the visit
took place on August 5, 2025, at the headquarters of the Port Police Command, and is aimed at fostering a more seamless and sustainable working relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and the MWUN. It also sought to reinforce commitment to the safety and security of all port operations, while promoting collaboration with critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s maritime industry.

Comrade Bunu, an Izon-born maritime expert from Delta State and a seasoned sailor , praised the Port Police for their strategic presence and consistent efforts in maintaining peace across port environments. He noted that the relative calm and orderliness at the ports were largely due to the vigilance and professionalism of the officers and men under CP Ishola’s leadership.

In his response, CP Olanrewaju Ishola lauded the leadership of MWUN for its sincerity, responsibility, and continuous cooperation with law enforcement. He emphasised that the peace currently being enjoyed in the ports could not have been achieved without the active partnership of the Union and other key stakeholders in the maritime sector.

The meeting also featured a critical interactive session between the leadership of the MWUN and senior officers of the Port Police. Discussions during the session centered on deepening cooperation, resolving emerging challenges, and developing long term strategies for enhancing security, efficiency, and productivity across the maritime sector.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to building a more secure and business-friendly maritime environment, pledging to work hand in hand to support national economic development through smooth port operations.
